Chapter Twenty-Five

On the way back, Seven mentioned a meeting with Grey that I knew didn’t involve me in any way, so he wouldn’t be happy to see me. “Do you mind dropping me at home?” Which he did. If he knew what I was planning, those cuffs of his would magically appear.

I had him let me out in front of the building and, with a quick kiss, went upstairs. I needed some cash and a cold water. Needing backup and knowing Grey wasn’t home, I picked the lock on Harper’s door. “Hello,” I yelled as soon as I stepped inside, dropping my bag in the entry. The patio was her preferred office space, and glancing in that direction, I saw that today was no different. She was waving. I went out and dropped into a chair next to her. “Raise your right hand.”

“Just tell me. If this is about me needing to keep a secret, it’s rude that you think I wouldn’t,” Harper huffed. “Is this about my author gig? Can’t go without Rella, and she’s got a meeting.”

“Rella would lobby hard to talk me out of this idea.” I told her about the Riggs Brennan case and meeting Cara earlier. “She avoided giving a straight answer to most of my questions, and when she talked about this woman, Evelyn, who has her kid, there was fear in her eyes.”

“You want to go to the strip club?” Harper looked surprised.

“I want to go back to her apartment building, see if the kid who guarded Seven’s car is still there, and pay him for more information. It’s not the kind of neighborhood a woman wants to go to by herself, day or night.”

“You’re going to have to get out of the car.” There was a duh in Harper’s tone.

“Not if you drive. I roll down the window, conduct business, and we drive off. That’s if we can find him.”

“That scenario is likely to get you arrested on suspicion of peddling drugs.”

“You know it’s a good idea,” I insisted.

“We’ll take my SUV. If the neighborhood is as you say, your Porsche will attract even more unwanted eyes.” Harper stood. “I’ve got to change.”

As she went down the hallway, I went into the kitchen and helped myself to a cookie, knowing that she always had them around for Grey.

Harper was back within minutes, having swapped her sundress for a pair of jeans. We both grabbed our bags and headed down in the elevator. “When the guys find out, they’re not going to be happy.”

“If neither of us tells them—”

“Grey finds out about everything,” Harper said with a knowing smile.

We got into her SUV, and she exited the garage and headed over to the highway while I programmed her GPS. With traffic on our side, it didn’t take long before we were turning onto Cara’s street. I grabbed money and a business card out of my pocket.

“It’s the olive-green monstrosity up ahead.” I nodded through the windshield. “We’re looking for a skinny little smoker leaning up against the side of the neighboring commercial building.
